Air Liquide invests €50 million to establish a renewable hydrogen supply chain along France's Seine Axis, supporting low-carbon transportation and industrial decarbonization in the Normandy and Ile-de-France regions.
Air Liquide has announced a EUR 50 million investment in a new hydrogen packaging and delivery supply chain aimed at fueling refueling stations along France’s Seine Axis. This ambitious project is a significant step in advancing low-carbon mobility and industrial decarbonization in the Normandy and Ile-de-France regions.
Hydrogen Supply Chain Supported by Renewable Electrolyzer
The new packaging site will receive renewable hydrogen from Air Liquide’s Normand’Hy electrolyzer, a 200 MW facility currently under construction. This initiative will play a pivotal role in decarbonizing both industrial activities and the mobility sector in Normandy.
The investment is part of Air Liquide's broader effort to establish a robust low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem in France's Normandy industrial basin. A quarter of the Normand’Hy electrolyzer’s production capacity will be allocated to decarbonized transportation, sufficient to power 500 hydrogen trucks or 10,000 light vehicles.
Driving Low-Carbon Mobility Along the Seine Axis
The Seine Axis project targets a diverse range of hydrogen-powered mobility solutions, including:
Hydrogen taxis: The number of hydrogen taxis in the region is expected to triple by the end of 2024.
Corporate utility fleets: Hydrogen will fuel light commercial vehicles for businesses.
Heavy vehicles: Hydrogen-powered buses and trucks will benefit from this initiative.
Partnerships for Hydrogen-Powered Transportation
The initiative builds on Air Liquide's strong partnerships, such as its agreement with HysetCo to supply renewable hydrogen for vehicle fleets. The Seine Axis hydrogen supply chain reinforces Air Liquide’s leadership in low-carbon mobility, from production to delivery.
Commitment to Industrial Decarbonization
The remaining three-quarters of the Normand’Hy electrolyzer’s hydrogen output will serve customers in the Normandy industrial basin. Key partners include TotalEnergies’ refinery in Gonfreville, ensuring the supply of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen to support sustainable industrial operations.
A Step Towards a Low-Carbon Future
This initiative is part of Air Liquide’s vision to develop comprehensive hydrogen ecosystems. According to Emilie Mouren-Renouard, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, the project is a decisive step in promoting low-carbon transportation while strengthening Air Liquide’s role across the renewable hydrogen value chain.
