In a major milestone for Africa’s renewable energy sector, Dubai-based Amea Power has secured two significant Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co. to develop large-scale solar and battery storage projects in Egypt. These initiatives will not only contribute to Egypt’s clean energy capacity but also position the country as a leader in the region's renewable energy market.

Massive Solar Projects in Aswan Governorate

The two projects are set to be constructed in Egypt’s Aswan governorate, a region already recognized for its solar potential. The first is a 1 GW solar power plant located in the Benban area, which will be integrated with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Once completed, the site will hold the distinction of being the largest solar-plus-BESS project on the African continent, significantly boosting the region’s renewable energy capacity.

The second project involves the installation of a 300 MWh BESS at Amea Power’s existing 500 MW Abydos solar array, which is currently under construction. This marks Egypt’s first-ever utility-scale BESS solution, setting a new precedent for energy storage in the country.

$800 Million Investment for a Greener Future

Amea Power is investing a substantial $800 million in these projects, which together will generate enough clean energy to power more than 769,000 homes. The projects aim not only to address energy demands but also to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and support community development in Egypt.

“These projects are not just about generating power, they are catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and community empowerment,” stated Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of Amea Power.

Amea Power's Growing Renewable Energy Portfolio

With these new developments, Amea Power’s total renewable energy capacity in Egypt now stands at 2 GW of solar power and 900 MWh of battery energy storage. The company continues to expand its renewable footprint, boasting operations in over 20 countries with a pipeline exceeding 6 GW and more than 1.6 GW already under operation or near completion.
