A Milestone for Renewable Energy in Chile

On March 20, Chile celebrated a monumental achievement in its journey toward sustainability with the inauguration of the Horizonte Wind Farm, the largest in the country and the second-largest in Latin America. Located 130 km northwest of Taltal, this wind farm boasts 140 turbines with an installed capacity of 816 MW, making it a flagship project in Chile’s energy transition efforts.

This milestone project represents an investment of $700 million by the national energy company, Colbún, which described it as the "most important inauguration of the energy transition in Chile."

Setting a Benchmark in Chile’s Energy Transition

José Ignacio Escobar, Executive Director of Colbún, emphasized the significance of the project:

"The inauguration of the Horizonte Wind Farm represents a crucial step towards our goal of significantly contributing to Chile’s energy matrix with renewable energies. Horizonte is an example of our commitment to a responsible energy transition and to the carbon neutrality objectives that Chile has set for 2050."

The Horizonte Wind Farm will not only contribute to carbon neutrality goals but also address the growing demand for competitive, safe, and sustainable energy in northern Chile.

Expansion Plans: 996 MW of Renewable Power by 2025

Colbún isn’t stopping at 816 MW. Plans are already underway to expand the wind farm further. A modification project, currently under environmental review, aims to:

  • Add 24 more wind turbines.

  • Increase installed capacity by 180 MW, bringing the total to an impressive 996 MW.

The second phase of this project, with an additional investment of $200 million, is expected to commence in the latter half of 2025, pending necessary approvals.

Chile’s Renewable Energy Vision

Chile has long been a leader in renewable energy in Latin America, striving toward its 2050 carbon neutrality goals. The Horizonte Wind Farm underscores the nation’s dedication to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing its clean energy portfolio.

By combining large-scale wind energy projects with robust environmental standards, Chile continues to inspire global efforts in clean energy and sustainable development.
