China takes a major step in sustainable aviation with the groundbreaking of the Shuangyashan Green Methanol and Aviation Fuel Base, integrating wind, solar, hydrogen, and biomass to produce green fuel.

China's Largest Sustainable Aviation Fuel Facility

In a major stride toward sustainable aviation, China has initiated the construction of the Shuangyashan Green Methanol and Green Aviation Fuel Demonstration Base, marking a new chapter in the nation’s clean energy revolution. Spearheaded by China Energy Engineering and China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., this groundbreaking project is located in the Shuangyashan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Heilongjiang Province, and integrates wind, solar, hydrogen, and biomass technologies to produce green aviation fuel.

Key Project Highlights: Advancing Green Aviation Fuel

The ambitious project aims to produce 200,000 tons of green methanol and 300,000 tons of green aviation fuel annually. The first phase, representing an investment of approximately 6 billion yuan ($857 million), will focus on generating 100,000 tons of green aviation fuel each year. This phase includes the construction of a 450-megawatt wind farm, a photovoltaic power station, a water electrolysis hydrogen production facility, a biomass pretreatment plant, and a green aviation fuel synthesis plant. The first phase is expected to be operational by 2027.

Fusion of Renewable Technologies: A Green Energy Milestone

At the heart of this project is the fusion of renewable technologies like wind and solar power, combined with hydrogen production and biomass processing. The plant's innovative design leverages biomass gasification and the Fischer-Tropsch process to convert hydrogen into green aviation fuel. The first phase's 100,000-ton production capacity will set a benchmark in China’s green hydrogen-to-aviation fuel sector.

This project is part of China's larger strategy to integrate energy, agriculture, chemical, and transportation industries. By employing cutting-edge technologies, the Shuangyashan base aims to address critical bottlenecks in biomass gasification and fuel synthesis. The emphasis on world-leading solutions with independent intellectual property rights underscores the project's significance in global green energy development.

Green Aviation Fuel: Supporting Carbon Neutrality and Local Development

The Shuangyashan facility is expected to generate significant economic benefits while driving a substantial reduction in annual carbon emissions. Its development is closely aligned with China's "dual carbon" goals, which focus on achieving carbon neutrality and transitioning to a new, sustainable energy framework. Once fully operational, the facility will support the local economy and enhance the region's industrial development, fostering high-quality growth in line with China’s modern industrial ambitions.
