Desert Technologies’ Ambitious Solar Investment in Jeddah In a major step toward bolstering Saudi Arabia's renewable energy capabilities, Desert Technologies has announced a significant investment of SAR 750 million (USD 200 million/EUR 183.4 million) for the development of a state-of-the-art solar panel and cell manufacturing facility. The new plant will be located in the third industrial zone of Jeddah, strategically positioned on the Kingdom’s west coast.

Partnership with Modon and Strategic Location

The project is being developed in partnership with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as Modon. The manufacturing complex will span 170,000 square meters of land provided by Modon, featuring advanced production lines capable of producing 2 GW of solar panels and 3 GW of solar cells. This collaboration marks a milestone in Saudi Arabia’s drive to establish itself as a leader in the global renewable energy market.

Meeting Growing Local Demand and Boosting Exports

Desert Technologies' new facility is set to play a vital role in meeting the rising local demand for sustainable energy solutions. The increased production of solar panels and cells will not only support domestic renewable energy initiatives but also enhance Saudi Arabia’s non-oil export portfolio, showcasing the Kingdom’s commitment to diversifying its economy.

Supporting Saudi Arabia’s Green Energy Vision

This ambitious project is part of a broader movement within Saudi Arabia to localize manufacturing technology and expand its renewable energy infrastructure. Initiatives like the development of solar panels, wind turbines, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) underscore the nation's dedication to sustainable practices and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The establishment of such facilities aligns with Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s blueprint for economic diversification and environmental sustainability.

Global Impact and Future Prospects

The 5-GW manufacturing facility is expected to position Saudi Arabia as a significant player in the international solar energy sector. By leveraging advanced technology and local resources, the Kingdom aims to contribute meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts while fortifying its own energy security and job market.
