Hamburg-based Eternal Power is planning an 80 MW green hydrogen production plant near Rostock, with plans to expand to 400 MW by 2030, supporting Germany’s energy transition.
In a significant move towards bolstering Germany’s green energy sector, Hamburg-based scale-up Eternal Power has announced plans to build a large-scale green hydrogen production plant in Dummerstorf, near Rostock. With an initial capacity of 80 megawatts (MW), the plant aims to produce 8,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2028, with future expansion plans increasing production to 400 MW by 2030.
Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production in Dummerstorf
The facility, to be built on a five-hectare site, represents one of the most ambitious hydrogen projects in Germany. Eternal Power has already secured a 2.3 billion euro preliminary contract for hydrogen sales, marking a critical step toward realizing this massive project. The green hydrogen produced will be supplied primarily to energy-intensive sectors such as shipping, aviation, and the chemical and steel industries.
Supporting Germany's Energy Transition with Hydrogen
Green hydrogen is emerging as a pivotal element in the energy transition, especially in reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries. Andreas Rimkus, Hydrogen Commissioner of the SPD parliamentary group, highlighted the significance of this project for advancing the sustainability of energy-intensive industries in Germany. With domestic green hydrogen production becoming increasingly important, initiatives like Eternal Power’s plant are essential for achieving the country's climate targets.
In line with the growing momentum in the hydrogen market, the German government has recognized the importance of such projects. In July 2024, the Federal Ministry of Economics, led by Robert Habeck, approved 500 million euros in funding for hydrogen initiatives in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, further boosting the sector’s growth.
Strategic Location and Expansion Plans
Dummerstorf offers several advantages as a location for the new plant, including proximity to offshore wind farms, access to the high-voltage grid, and connection to the planned hydrogen core network. These factors make it an ideal hub for green hydrogen production. Eternal Power also plans to use a proprietary software solution to optimize electricity procurement, ensuring the electrolysis plant operates efficiently at low costs.
By 2030, the company plans to expand its production capacity to 400 MW, and grid operator 50Hertz is already working on the necessary high-voltage infrastructure to support this growth. Eternal Power has secured the required land for the expansion and anticipates strong demand from customers eager to transition to cleaner energy sources.
