Australian green hydrogen innovator Hysata has joined forces with South Korean steel giant POSCO to advance next-generation electrolyser technology, signaling a pivotal moment in the evolution of green hydrogen production. This partnership, announced through two joint development agreements, leverages Hysata's innovative electrolysis technology and POSCO’s extensive expertise in materials and engineering.

Focus Areas of the Collaboration

The partnership is divided into two strategic agreements:

  • POSCO Holdings will collaborate on materials and system development for Hysata’s electrolyser technology.

  • POSCO Eco & Challenge, a subsidiary, will focus on the construction aspects of the advanced electrolyser systems.

Revolutionizing Electrolyser Efficiency

Hysata’s pioneering capillary-fed electrolyser system is the centerpiece of this collaboration. Unlike traditional alkaline and PEM electrolyser systems, which rely on liquid electrolyte reservoirs, Hysata’s design uses capillary action to transport the electrolyte directly to the reaction sites. This eliminates significant resistance losses, achieving a record-breaking electrical efficiency of 95% (41.5 kWh/kg of hydrogen).

This efficiency far surpasses the current 70-75% rates seen in commercial systems, promising to dramatically lower the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and redefine the economics of green hydrogen production.

No Immediate Joint Deployments, Focus on Development

While the agreements do not include immediate plans for joint deployments, the collaboration is focused on intensifying technological development to further refine and scale Hysata's groundbreaking electrolyser technology.

Leaders Speak on the Collaboration

Paul Barrett, CEO of Hysata, described the partnership as transformative:

“This is an important partnership that leverages Hysata’s groundbreaking electrolysis cell technology and POSCO Group’s extensive expertise in materials, system development, engineering, and construction. Our 41.5 kWh/kg H2 system efficiency will drive down the levelized cost of hydrogen and transform the economics of green hydrogen production.”

Dr. Juwoung Yoon, Head of Clean Hydrogen Research at POSCO Holdings, highlighted the collaboration's global significance:

“This joint development effort is poised to accelerate global green hydrogen advancements, contributing to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, including steelmaking.”

A Milestone in Green Hydrogen Innovation

This partnership follows Hysata’s successful $111 million Series B funding round earlier this year, with major investments from both POSCO entities. It signifies the growing momentum in the global hydrogen market and the increasing focus on developing efficient, scalable solutions to meet the decarbonization goals of industries like steelmaking.
