India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train to Begin Trials

Indian Railways is set to achieve a significant milestone in its green energy journey with the trial run of its first hydrogen-powered train this December. The test will take place on the 90-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, showcasing India’s progress in adopting cutting-edge sustainable technology in transportation.

A Sustainable Innovation: Hydrogen-Powered Trains in India

The hydrogen-powered train has been developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Tamil Nadu. Designed for speeds up to 140 kilometers per hour, the train utilizes fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. The result is a completely emission-free journey, with water vapor as its only by-product.

This innovation is a key step toward Indian Railways’ ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. If the trial proves successful, the network plans to roll out 35 more hydrogen-powered trains by 2025, further accelerating its green transition.

Pilot Project on Jind-Sonipat Route

Indian Railways has also initiated a pilot project to retrofit an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells. This project, valued at ₹111.83 crores, includes building the necessary ground infrastructure. The retrofitted rake will operate on the same Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway, paving the way for integrating hydrogen technology into the existing fleet.

Global Momentum for Hydrogen Trains

With this initiative, India joins countries like Germany, Sweden, and China that are leading the charge in deploying hydrogen-powered trains. These countries have demonstrated the viability of hydrogen technology in reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

Driving Toward a Greener Future

This trial represents a significant leap for Indian Railways, marking its commitment to sustainable energy solutions and climate goals. By embracing hydrogen technology, India positions itself as a global player in the green transportation revolution.
