In a groundbreaking collaboration, PT PLN Indonesia Power and Saudi investors have unveiled plans to develop a Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) on Lake Singkarak in Tanah Datar, West Sumatra. With an estimated investment of Rp50 trillion (US$3.15 billion), the project is set to elevate Indonesia's renewable energy capacity and bolster its transition to sustainable energy sources.

A Visionary Renewable Energy Initiative

Announced by Andre Rosiade, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives' Commission VI, the initiative reflects Indonesia's commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. “We will collaborate with Saudi investors to build a floating solar power plant in Lake Singkarak,” said Rosiade during a media briefing in Padang, West Sumatra, on December 7, 2024.

Inspired by the success of the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant in West Java, the Lake Singkarak project aims to replicate and enhance this model to meet Indonesia's growing energy needs sustainably.

Key Features of the Floating Solar Project

Location & Capacity

  • Situated on Lake Singkarak, the plant will have a capacity of 90 megawatts (MW).

  • A second floating solar power plant in the Saguling Reservoir, West Java, will provide an additional 60 MW.

Environmental Considerations

  • The project promises to protect the Lake Singkarak ecosystem and bring tangible benefits to local communities.

  • It aligns with the government’s sustainability goals to balance energy production with ecological preservation.

Community Engagement

  • Local outreach campaigns led by Commission VI, PLN, and Tanah Datar regency officials will ensure public support and community involvement.

  • The initiative is expected to create job opportunities and foster economic development in the region.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Renewable Energy Goals

The Lake Singkarak and Saguling floating solar projects are pivotal to Indonesia’s strategy to expand clean energy capacity. Supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), these projects:

  • Contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions,

  • Support Indonesia’s sustainability targets under international climate agreements, and

  • Demonstrate innovative approaches to utilizing water bodies for energy generation without extensive land use.

Local and Global Collaboration

Collaboration between PT PLN, Saudi investors, and government officials highlights the potential of international partnerships in driving renewable energy progress. This ambitious investment sets a benchmark for future renewable projects in Indonesia and beyond.
