Lhyfe and Elyse Energy have announced their collaboration to develop e-methanol production from green hydrogen at the heart of the industrial port ecosystem of the Loire estuary. This project, known as Green Coast, aims to decarbonize the maritime transport sector and enhance industrial sustainability in the region.

A Decarbonization Project for Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port

Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port has been actively working to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and transition to cleaner energy sources. Supported by local authorities, including the Pays de la Loire Region and Saint-Nazaire Agglomération, the port's decarbonization efforts are driving new industrial growth and job creation. The Loire Estuaire Décarbonation ZIBaC programme plays a crucial role in ensuring synergy between various decarbonization initiatives in the area, including the Green Coast project.

Green Hydrogen and E-Methanol Production to Boost Sustainability

Lhyfe, selected in 2023 to develop green hydrogen production in Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port, plans to build an industrial unit with a production capacity of up to 85 tonnes of green hydrogen per day by 2028. The green hydrogen produced will fuel Elyse Energy's e-methanol production facility, which aims to generate 150,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year. This renewable fuel will decarbonize maritime transport and support local mobility and industrial applications.

Long-Term Regional Impact and Future Prospects

The Green Coast project is a key component of the Loire Estuaire Décarbonation initiative, supported by the French government’s France 2030 program. It will be located at the Montoir-de-Bretagne industrial port hub, and is expected to contribute significantly to regional sustainability and economic development. While the project is still in the development phase, with operational licenses and financial decisions pending, initial study results will be communicated by 2025.
