MNRE Releases Scheme Guidelines for Green hydrogen Pilot Projects

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has rolled out pioneering guidelines for a series of pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Launched in January 2023 with an ambitious INR 19,744 crore investment, this mission aspires to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production, technology, and market innovation, while propelling the nation's clean energy transition.

Exploring New Production Methods to Decarbonize India’s Economy

These pilot projects aim to utilize innovative hydrogen production methods, such as floating solar hydrogen production, biomass-based hydrogen, and hydrogen generated from wastewater. This decentralized approach focuses on optimizing local resources, including renewable energy sources, water, and land, reducing the need for extensive infrastructure.

The projects will tap into applications across residential, commercial, and community settings, introducing green hydrogen as an eco-friendly fuel for cooking, heating, off-grid electricity, and even off-road vehicles. Furthermore, the pilot initiatives will evaluate green hydrogen's technical feasibility in everyday applications like household appliances, city gas networks, and other community utilities.

Strengthening Infrastructure for Green Hydrogen Adoption

A notable INR 200 crore has been allocated to support these pilot projects until the 2025-26 fiscal year. Managed by Scheme Implementing Agencies (SIAs) like the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), the National Institute of Bio-Energy (NIBE), and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the projects will provide crucial insights into overcoming current challenges in green hydrogen technologies, infrastructure, and supply chains.

The projects are designed to establish a foundational ecosystem that will include refueling stations, storage facilities, and distribution networks, forming a sustainable hydrogen supply chain across India.

Paving the Way for Carbon Neutrality

This initiative is a critical component of India’s decarbonization agenda. By promoting the secure use of green hydrogen and broadening its application, the National Green Hydrogen Mission seeks to validate its safe integration in new sectors, fostering widespread acceptance and enabling the country to make significant strides towards its carbon neutrality objectives.

As India pushes the boundaries of renewable hydrogen, these pilot projects stand to establish India as a leader in global clean energy, bolstering sustainable development while reinforcing the nation’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and driving the transition to a green economy.
