In a landmark move to advance renewable energy and green hydrogen adoption, NHPC Ltd, a leading renewable energy producer in India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bihar government. Announced at the Bihar Business Connect 2024 Summit, this collaboration involves a massive investment of ₹5,500 crore to develop 1,000 MW of solar power projects and initiate green hydrogen mobility pilot projects in the state.
Transforming Bihar's Renewable Energy Landscape
NHPC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Raj Kumar Chaudhary, highlighted the critical role of state support in land acquisition for the timely execution of these ambitious projects. The initiative reflects Bihar's commitment to transitioning towards cleaner energy solutions while fostering industrial growth.
A notable aspect of the partnership is the proposed establishment of a solar-powered green hydrogen production plant, which will supply hydrogen for passenger buses. These hydrogen-powered buses, financed by NHPC, will be handed over to the Bihar government to promote zero-emission public transportation, further reducing the state’s carbon footprint.
Green Hydrogen: A Game-Changer for Sustainability
Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources like solar power, is gaining traction as a clean energy alternative with zero carbon emissions. NHPC’s foray into green hydrogen in Bihar is part of a broader initiative, with similar projects underway in Gujarat and other states, aligning with the Indian government’s push for sustainable fuel solutions.
Initially, the pilot project will introduce one hydrogen-powered bus, which will serve as a model for scalability as solar energy capacity in the state expands. This integration of solar energy and hydrogen mobility exemplifies the synergy between cutting-edge technology and sustainability goals.
NHPC's Renewable Energy Legacy
NHPC, with an operational hydropower capacity of 7 GW and an additional 9.3 GW under construction, is no stranger to leading India’s clean energy revolution. The company’s investment in Bihar marks a significant step towards diversifying its portfolio, leveraging solar energy to produce green hydrogen and fostering sustainable transportation solutions.
A Bright Future for Bihar and Beyond
The partnership between NHPC and Bihar underscores the potential of public-private collaboration in achieving India’s renewable energy targets. As NHPC scales up its solar and green hydrogen projects, Bihar is poised to become a hub for clean energy innovation, paving the way for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
