NTPC partners with the Indian Army to launch a Solar Hydrogen microgrid in Ladakh, ensuring round-the-clock, eco-friendly power to off-grid Army posts.
In a significant move towards sustainable defence infrastructure, NTPC Ltd. has partnered with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This innovative project aims to ensure round-the-clock power for the Indian Army’s remote, off-grid locations using green hydrogen as a clean energy source. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the project’s foundation via video conferencing, highlighting its strategic importance to India’s energy transition and national defence.
The Solar Hydrogen-Based Microgrid for Sustainable Power in Ladakh
The Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid, developed by NTPC, is designed to operate independently, providing an uninterrupted 200kW power supply year-round. It replaces diesel generators, traditionally used at high-altitude army locations, with a renewable, scalable solution that leverages Ladakh’s high solar irradiance. Operating at an altitude of 4,400 meters, where temperatures can plummet to -30°C, this microgrid will maintain reliable power for the Indian Army despite the region’s extreme conditions.
Reducing Emissions and Enhancing Energy Security for Remote Army Locations
This initiative is set to minimize carbon emissions by reducing reliance on diesel. The hybrid system combines solar power with hydrogen energy storage, creating an efficient and environmentally-friendly energy ecosystem. The microgrid’s design ensures a stable power supply even in severe weather, helping the Indian Army reduce its logistical dependence on fuel supplies that are often delayed due to connectivity disruptions.
The Indian Army’s adoption of green hydrogen in partnership with NTPC marks a milestone in the decarbonisation of defence energy. NTPC’s broader initiatives in Ladakh include hydrogen-powered buses and a hydrogen fueling station to support local, eco-friendly public transportation.
