State-owned NTPC Limited, a leading player in India's power sector, has successfully commissioned 160 megawatts (MW) of its 320 MW Bhainsara solar project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The newly operational solar capacity marks a significant step in NTPC's ongoing commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
Expanding Renewable Energy Capacity
With the commissioning of this 160 MW solar capacity, the total installed and commercial capacity of the NTPC group has now reached an impressive 76,294 MW. This achievement underscores NTPC's strategy to enhance its renewable energy footprint in line with India’s broader goal of transitioning to sustainable and clean energy sources.
The Bhainsara solar project is being developed by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a stepdown subsidiary of NTPC Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary, NTPC Green Energy Ltd. The commencement of commercial operations for this project, effective from August 28, 2024, signifies NTPC’s growing focus on renewable energy as a key component of its business strategy.
Commitment to a Sustainable Future
NTPC's latest venture is part of a larger push to diversify its energy mix and reduce carbon emissions. The company has been progressively investing in renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, to support India’s ambitious targets of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.
By commissioning the Bhainsara solar project, NTPC not only reinforces its commitment to sustainability but also contributes to the development of renewable energy infrastructure in Rajasthan, one of India’s prime locations for solar energy due to its high solar insolation levels.
