NTPC Green Energy is building India’s largest green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, aiming to produce 1,100 tonnes of hydrogen daily and supporting a renewable energy ecosystem with advanced infrastructure.
NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL) is constructing India’s largest green hydrogen hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. Spanning an impressive 1,200 acres, the facility aims to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape in India. According to a senior NTPC official, this hub will be operational within the next three years, providing a boost to electrolyzer, green hydrogen, and derivative manufacturers.
Pioneering Green Hydrogen Production
Around 600 acres of the site will host a cutting-edge green hydrogen production facility capable of generating 1,100 tonnes per day—equivalent to half a million tonnes annually. In addition to green hydrogen, the facility will also produce green derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel, marking a significant milestone in India’s decarbonization efforts.
Integrated Industrial Hub for Renewable Energy
The hub isn’t just about hydrogen; it’s a comprehensive ecosystem. Around 300 acres of land will be allocated for plug-and-play facilities supporting the manufacturing of electrolysers, solar PV modules, battery energy storage systems, and fuel cells. An additional 200 acres will feature shared infrastructure like effluent and sewage treatment plants, medical facilities, a convention center, and recreational areas.
Challenges and Roadmap Ahead
Despite the ambitious plans, the production of green hydrogen at scale may take five to six years. High costs are a significant barrier, with current production costs ranging between $4.10 and $7 per kilogram. Industry experts believe green hydrogen will become viable once costs drop below $3 per kilogram.
Funding the Vision
To fuel this transformative project, NTPC Green Energy is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) to raise ₹10,000 crores. The funding will support the development of the hydrogen ecosystem and enable NTPC Green Energy to drive India closer to achieving its renewable energy goals.
