Plenitude begins construction on a 220 MW solar plant in Salamanca, Spain, set to generate 400 GWh of renewable energy annually. The project marks a major milestone in Spain's renewable energy expansion.
Plenitude, a subsidiary of Eni, has broken ground on a massive 220-megawatt (MW) solar plant in Villarino de los Aires, Salamanca, Spain. Set to become one of the largest solar installations in the Castilla y Leon region, the project is part of the company's ambitious expansion in renewable energy across Spain.
220 MW Solar Plant to Transform Renewable Energy Landscape in Castilla y Leon
Spanning 286 hectares, this solar plant will feature 365,300 bifacial modules and is expected to generate over 400 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity per year. This output will be enough to power thousands of homes and reduce the region's carbon footprint, reinforcing Spain's efforts towards achieving its renewable energy goals.
The project, scheduled for completion in 2025, will be connected to Spain’s national grid via a 3.2-kilometer underground medium-voltage line. Leading the construction efforts is Sterling & Wilson, a well-known photovoltaic construction firm, in collaboration with local companies.
Expanding Plenitude’s Renewable Energy Footprint in Spain
With this development, Plenitude continues to enhance its presence in Castilla y Leon, complementing its existing 13 MW wind facility in the region. Currently, the company operates over 440 MW of photovoltaic and wind capacity across various Spanish regions. Additionally, Plenitude is in the process of constructing renewable energy projects totaling 1 GW in Spain, and it has an impressive pipeline of more than 2 GW of new capacity in development.
Mariangiola Mollicone, Managing Director of Plenitude Spain and Western Europe Renewables Head, emphasized the importance of local collaboration for the success of this project: “The Villarino project is a virtuous example of integration with the territory. Being here today, in the presence of all the actors involved, is tangible proof of our willingness to continue this collaborative approach in the coming years, in line with our business and growth strategy in the country.”
Partnership for Offshore Wind Expansion
In addition to its solar projects, Plenitude has also partnered with BlueFloat Energy and Sener Renewable Investments to develop offshore wind projects in Spain. This alliance, formed in early 2024, strengthens an existing joint venture created in 2020 aimed at developing 1.25 GW of floating offshore wind energy. Key projects in the consortium’s portfolio include Parque Nordes in Galicia, Parc Tramuntana in Catalonia, and Parque Tarahal in the Canary Islands.
