Plug Power and Allied Green Ammonia sign a landmark agreement for 3GW of electrolyzer capacity at a green hydrogen-to-ammonia plant in Australia, advancing global clean energy efforts.

Plug Power Inc., a major player in hydrogen solutions, has entered into a binding framework agreement with Allied Green Ammonia (AGA), an Australian company pioneering green ammonia production. The deal lays the foundation for a significant supply contract for 3 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzer capacity, which will be installed at AGA’s green hydrogen-to-ammonia plant in Australia.

3GW Electrolyzer to Power Green Ammonia Production

The agreement is the next step following the successful completion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a Basic Engineering and Design Package (BEDP) between the two companies. The final sales and purchase contract is expected in the coming months, with the delivery of Plug Power’s advanced electrolyzer system scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027.

Located on the Gove Peninsula in Australia’s Northern Territory, AGA’s state-of-the-art facility aims to produce approximately 2,700 metric tons of green ammonia per day. The green ammonia will be supplied to AGA’s expanding customer base across Asia and Europe, helping to meet the growing demand for clean energy solutions. By leveraging renewable energy resources, the plant will significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional ammonia production methods, which typically rely on Steam Methane Reforming (SMR).

Leading the Transition to Green Hydrogen and Ammonia

The partnership represents a milestone in global green hydrogen and ammonia production. Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, highlighted the environmental and economic benefits: “Ammonia producers are recognizing the substantial advantages of cost and carbon reduction through electrolysis-based hydrogen. We’re thrilled to formalize this framework agreement with Allied Green Ammonia, who is at the forefront of global hydrogen and ammonia production and facility design.”

Alfred Benedict, Chairman and Managing Director of Allied Green, echoed this sentiment: “Our collaboration with Plug Power builds on years of work, allowing us to efficiently harness electrolysis-based hydrogen and reduce carbon emissions in the ammonia production process.”

AGA Project: Driving Jobs and Sustainability in Australia

The AGA project has garnered strong support from the Northern Territory Government, the Australian Government, and local indigenous groups. In addition to contributing to global decarbonization efforts, the project is expected to generate thousands of local jobs, providing a boost to the regional economy.
