Plug Power partners with Allied Green Ammonia to supply 3 GW of electrolyzer capacity for one of the world’s largest green ammonia plants in Australia, marking a milestone in sustainable hydrogen production.
In a significant move for the global hydrogen economy, Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a leading provider of hydrogen solutions, has signed a binding framework agreement with Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) to supply three gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzer capacity for AGA’s green hydrogen to ammonia facility in Australia. This agreement marks a crucial step toward establishing one of the largest green ammonia production plants in the world.
A Step Forward in Green Ammonia Production
The new agreement comes on the heels of a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a Basic Engineering and Design Package (BEDP) between Plug Power and AGA. The companies are now set to finalize the sales and purchase agreement for the supply of Plug’s electrolyzer systems, with the delivery expected by the end of 2026 or early 2027. This partnership between Plug Power and AGA represents a groundbreaking shift in the ammonia industry by decarbonizing traditional production methods and replacing them with environmentally sustainable alternatives.
Strategic Location and Impact
The green hydrogen and ammonia facility will be located at Gove Peninsula in Australia’s Northern Territory, a location that offers access to abundant renewable energy resources. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce approximately 2,700 metric tons per day (TPD) of green ammonia, which will be supplied to customers in Asia and Europe. This strategically placed facility will ensure a secure and reliable supply of green ammonia, meeting the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions.
Decarbonizing Ammonia Production
Traditional ammonia production methods rely heavily on Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), which contributes significantly to carbon emissions. By utilizing Plug Power’s advanced electrolyzer technology, the AGA facility will generate green hydrogen, which will then be converted into green ammonia. This approach significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with ammonia production, positioning AGA’s product as a sustainable alternative to its conventional, carbon-intensive counterparts.
