PM Narendra Modi launches five solar parks under Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 in Maharashtra, marking the beginning of the world's largest decentralized solar power project, set to generate 16,000 MW by 2026.
In a landmark move for India’s renewable energy sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first five solar parks of the world’s largest decentralized solar power generation project, with a total capacity of 16,000 MW. This ambitious project, designed to provide daytime electricity to farmers for irrigation, was launched at Pohradevi in Washim district, Maharashtra, on Saturday.
The event was attended by an array of prominent political figures, including Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Rajiv Ranjan, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0
The solar parks are part of the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 (MSKVY 2.0), which aligns with the Central Government’s PM Kusum Yojana. This initiative aims to revolutionize agricultural energy supply by generating solar power exclusively for farmers' irrigation needs. Under MSKVY 2.0, a total of 9,200 MW of solar power projects are currently in development, with completion expected by September 2025.
The first five projects inaugurated include solar parks located in Dhondalgaon (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district), Bamni Budrak (Nanded district), Haroli (Kolhapur district), Jalalabad (Akola district), and Palshi Budruk (Buldhana district). These parks boast a combined capacity of 19 MW.
Solar Energy to Power Agriculture in Maharashtra
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the transformative role of solar energy in supporting farmers and addressing energy challenges in rural areas. As part of the ceremony, he also transferred ₹20.55 crore to 411 gram panchayats, which played a crucial role in facilitating the development of solar projects.
The decentralized nature of this solar power generation initiative marks it as a global milestone. The state government has already completed the tender process for 4,800 MW of solar power projects, with work orders issued. By March 2026, the entire 16,000 MW capacity will be fully operational, ensuring that Maharashtra’s farmers have access to affordable, sustainable, and reliable electricity for irrigation.
A Game-Changer for India’s Renewable Energy Future
The Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 is the largest decentralized solar power project in the world, specifically focused on meeting agricultural energy demands. Through this scheme, a dedicated power company for farmers has been established, ensuring energy security and empowering rural communities.
This project not only supports India’s national renewable energy goals but also contributes significantly to the global fight against climate change by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
