QatarEnergy has unveiled plans to build the Dukhan Solar Power Project, a massive solar power plant that will significantly increase the country’s solar energy production, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions and supporting a sustainable energy transition. The new project, located in the Dukhan area, will be one of the largest solar power plants in the world, boasting a production capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW).
The ambitious project was announced by HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, during a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Doha. Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted that the new Dukhan Solar Power Project will more than double Qatar’s photovoltaic (PV) solar power production capacity to approximately 4,000 MW by 2030. This expansion aligns with QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy, aiming to diversify the nation’s energy sources and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
A Landmark Solar Initiative for Sustainable Development
Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized the importance of solar power development in Qatar’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, develop sustainable projects, and diversify electricity production. "The development of solar power plants is one of Qatar’s most crucial initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions," said Minister Al-Kaabi. "The Dukhan Solar Power Plant alone is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 4.7 million tons per annum."
Expanding QatarEnergy’s Solar Power Portfolio
The Dukhan Solar Power Project will join QatarEnergy’s existing solar power assets, including the Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, which was inaugurated in 2022 with a capacity of 800 MW. Additionally, QatarEnergy is nearing completion of two other solar power projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, with a combined production capacity of 875 MW, set to commence operations by the end of this year.
A Strategic Move Towards Energy Diversification
With the addition of the Dukhan Solar Power Project, QatarEnergy’s total solar power capacity in Qatar will reach about 4,000 MW by 2030, representing roughly 30% of the country's total electrical power production capacity. This significant increase underscores Qatar's commitment to energy diversification and sustainable development.
