Reliance NU Suntech Private Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Power Limited, has emerged as a major player in India’s renewable energy sector by securing a 930 MW solar energy project paired with a 1,860 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The project, awarded under the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) Tranche XVII auction, positions Reliance NU Suntech as a leader in the development of sustainable energy solutions.
This achievement came after an e-reverse auction on December 9, 2024, where Reliance NU Suntech outbid competitors to claim the largest individual allocation of the 2,000 MW tendered capacity.
Affordable and Long-Term Energy Supply
Reliance NU Suntech secured the project at a competitive tariff of ₹3.53 per kWh ($0.0416 per kWh). SECI will enter into a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the company, ensuring the solar power generated is distributed to various Indian discoms.
The project will feature a minimum storage capacity of 465 MW/1,860 MWh, guaranteeing a reliable peak power supply of four hours daily. This development underscores Reliance NU Suntech’s commitment to meeting India’s growing energy demands through innovative, cost-effective solutions.
Sustainable Development on a Grand Scale
The solar project will be developed on a build-own-operate basis, connected to the interstate transmission system in compliance with Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) regulations. This strategic integration enhances the efficiency and scalability of solar energy transmission across states.
Reliance Power’s Legacy and Market Growth
Reliance Power Limited, the parent company, boasts a diversified portfolio of 5,300 MW, including its flagship 3,960 MW Sasan Power Plant, the world’s largest integrated coal-based power facility. The company’s transition to renewable energy marks a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability.
Bolstered by this solar project win, Reliance Power’s shares have seen an 83.55% surge in value this year, with a 52-week high reached in October.
Advancing India’s Renewable Energy Goals
This project aligns with India’s ambitious renewable energy targets, reflecting a broader push towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels and achieving a sustainable energy mix. Reliance NU Suntech’s success in SECI’s Tranche XVII auction not only strengthens its leadership in solar energy but also underscores India’s progress in harnessing clean energy for a sustainable future.
