Romania has taken a significant leap in its renewable energy journey with the signing of 113 grant contracts by Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. The €63.6 million initiative will fund photovoltaic systems for self-consumption, boosting energy efficiency across municipalities, small towns, and communal authorities.

Major Investment in Local Photovoltaic Systems

The contracts, covering a total capacity of 41.7 MW, target various public entities, including 91 communes, nine towns, six municipalities, two municipal hospitals in Salonta and Rădăuți, and even the historic Sihăstria monastery. Funded through the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, the projects aim to integrate energy storage solutions alongside PV systems to maximize efficiency and sustainability.

Lowering Costs, Empowering Communities

Minister Burduja highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative: reducing utility costs for schools, kindergartens, health centers, and public lighting while reinvesting saved funds into local development.

“We prioritize investments to ensure energy independence and security for Romania. These grants mark a crucial step towards building a resilient and democratic energy sector,” Burduja emphasized, acknowledging the nation’s strategic need for energy autonomy amidst geopolitical challenges.

Challenges in Household Solar Adoption

While the public sector strides ahead, Romania's household solar program, Casa Verde Fotovoltaice, faces growing pains. Despite its billions-euro valuation, bottlenecks in certified installation services have delayed thousands of solar systems, leaving participants waiting months for activation.

Certified installers are overwhelmed, with some shutting down operations entirely, raising concerns about program efficiency and sustainability. Beneficiaries, who paid nominal upfront costs, must navigate deadlines to secure grant payments for their installations.

A Step Toward Energy Security

This dual approach—supporting public authorities while addressing the complexities in household solar adoption—highlights Romania's dedication to its energy transition goals. The successful execution of these projects could set a benchmark for regional renewable energy programs, ensuring a sustainable, community-focused future.
