Saipem and Nel ASA have launched the IVHY 100, a scalable and modular 100 MW electrolyzer platform for large-scale green hydrogen production, showcasing their commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Saipem S.p.A. (San Donato Milanese, Italy) and Nel ASA (Oslo, Norway) have introduced a groundbreaking solution for large-scale green hydrogen production at the 2024 World Hydrogen Week in Copenhagen. The two companies have unveiled the IVHY 100, a turnkey 100 MW electrolyzer concept powered by Nel’s atmospheric alkaline electrolyzer technology. This innovation is designed to meet the growing demand for renewable hydrogen and is poised to make a significant impact in the field of clean energy.
A Scalable, Modular Hydrogen-Generation Platform
The IVHY 100 platform is engineered to be scalable and modular, making it a practical choice for businesses aiming to adopt green hydrogen on a large scale. With its industrialized design, the platform enables faster installation and commissioning, helping to streamline the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source. The electrolyzers, developed by Nel, have been tested and refined over decades, providing unparalleled durability, robustness, and energy efficiency.
Nel’s alkaline electrolyzers have long been a trusted solution in the market, making them ideal for companies looking to optimize their operations and reduce total costs of ownership. This collaboration between Saipem and Nel is a step forward in simplifying the production of renewable hydrogen and meeting the growing demands of industries aiming to reduce carbon emissions.
Saipem and Nel: A Partnership for Green Hydrogen Innovation
The collaboration between Saipem and Nel ASA combines Nel’s expertise in hydrogen production technologies with Saipem’s engineering and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) capabilities. Under this partnership, Nel will supply its alkaline and PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer technologies and provide technical services, while Saipem will handle the design, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction of the green hydrogen facilities.
Guido d’Aloisio, Chief Commercial Officer of Saipem, emphasized the importance of the new platform: “The IVHY 100 technology represents a significant step forward to promote innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of renewable hydrogen. We aim to meet the increasing demand to reduce carbon emissions in challenging industries by utilizing renewable hydrogen, and we focus on creating hydrogen derivatives like ammonia, methanol, and sustainable fuels.”
Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel ASA, also expressed pride in the collaboration: “We are proud that Saipem, a world-leading Engineering Procurement and Construction company actively contributing to the energy transition, has selected Nel and our technology. With this solution, we are simplifying large-scale renewable hydrogen production.”
Addressing the Growing Demand for Carbon Emission Reduction
The IVHY 100 platform is not only a significant innovation in renewable hydrogen production but also a critical tool for industries striving to meet carbon reduction targets. By leveraging the power of green hydrogen, the platform will help industries transition to cleaner energy sources, reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.
This electrolyzer concept is also aimed at supporting the production of hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, and sustainable fuels, which are crucial for reducing emissions in sectors like transportation, chemicals, and heavy industries.
