Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 achieves its first power milestone, delivering clean energy a year after construction began. The 96 MW project underscores South Korea's offshore wind potential and aligns with its 2030 and 2050 clean energy goals.
The 96-megawatt (MW) Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 project, located off the coast of Shin-an, has achieved a major milestone by delivering its first power, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) announced. The milestone comes just a year after construction began in early 2023, underscoring the swift progress of the project.
Commercial operations for the offshore wind farm are slated for the first quarter of 2025. Once operational, Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 is expected to supply clean energy to approximately 60,000 households, marking a significant contribution to South Korea’s ambitious renewable energy goals.
Collaboration Driving South Korea's Offshore Wind Growth
The Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 project is being developed through a joint partnership among CIP, utilizing its Copenhagen Infrastructure III fund, SK Innovation E&S, and Copenhagen Offshore Partners.
"First power from Jeonnam 1 is a landmark for CIP, our partners, and the offshore wind industry in South Korea. It showcases our strong project execution capabilities, and we are proud to have reached this milestone alongside our partners," said Thomas Wibe Poulsen, partner at CIP.
This project is part of CIP’s broader 5-gigawatt (GW) offshore wind development pipeline in South Korea, which the firm has been pursuing since entering the market in 2018.
Supporting South Korea’s Clean Energy Goals
South Korea, with its vast offshore wind potential, is quickly emerging as a leader in the Asia-Pacific renewable energy sector. The nation has set an ambitious target of installing 14.3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, a move aimed at supporting its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 exemplifies South Korea's strategic push toward harnessing offshore wind energy and the role of international partnerships in advancing the country’s clean energy infrastructure.
CIP's Commitment to Renewable Energy in Asia
With its growing portfolio in South Korea, CIP continues to demonstrate its expertise in offshore wind development, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the transition to renewable energy. Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 represents a step forward in delivering sustainable energy solutions and fostering innovation within South Korea's clean energy landscape.
