Tata Power Renewable Energy Commissions India’s Largest Floating Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a leader in India’s clean energy transition, has successfully commissioned a groundbreaking 126 MW floating solar project in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. This ambitious project, awarded by NHDC Limited at a value of ₹596 crores, stands as one of the largest floating solar installations in India.

A Solar Marvel on Water

The project spans an impressive 260 hectares of water surface between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs in Khandwa district. It features 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass solar modules, delivering approximately 204,580 MWh of green energy annually. This clean energy will power the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL), effectively offsetting around 173,893 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Engineering Innovation: Built for Resilience

TPREL designed the installation to endure the challenges of fluctuating water levels and high wind speeds. The project is equipped with advanced mooring systems, wave breakers, and ballast anchors to ensure stability and efficiency. Additionally, the installation contributes to water conservation, reducing evaporation and saving an estimated 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually.

A Milestone in Renewable Energy

With the commissioning of this floating solar project, TPREL’s total renewable energy capacity has climbed to 10.9 GW, including 5.6 GW under development and 5.3 GW in operation. This operational capacity consists of 4.3 GW of solar energy and 1 GW of wind energy, reaffirming TPREL’s commitment to a greener future.

Earlier this year, TPREL further expanded its solar portfolio by collaborating with Chengmari Tea Estate to commission a 1,040 kW bifacial solar system project.

Pioneering Sustainability in Madhya Pradesh

This project not only highlights TPREL’s innovative approach to renewable energy but also showcases Madhya Pradesh’s growing prominence as a renewable energy hub. It is a testament to the potential of floating solar technology in addressing land scarcity while contributing to sustainability goals.
