In a significant step towards strengthening its renewable energy portfolio, Tesco has announced the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for solar power. The agreement, facilitated by EDF, secures 65% of the solar power generated from the Cleve Hill Solar Park in Faversham, Kent.
Major Renewable Energy Initiative
The Cleve Hill Solar Park, currently under development by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, is set to become one of the largest solar farms in the UK. The facility will have a capacity of 373 megawatts (MW) and will feature over 560,000 solar panels. Once operational in early 2025, this solar park will play a crucial role in Tesco’s renewable energy strategy.
Reducing Tesco’s Carbon Footprint
Under this agreement, the solar energy provided by the Cleve Hill project will cover approximately 10% of Tesco's electricity demand in the UK. The amount of energy generated will be sufficient to power 144 large Tesco stores for an entire year. This PPA is a major step in Tesco's mission to achieve carbon neutrality and transition to 100% renewable energy across its operations.
