The Philippines has approved 1.65 GW of offshore wind projects developed by Triconti Windkraft Group and partners, marking a major step towards meeting the country’s renewable energy goals.

 
Philippines Approves 1.65 GW of Offshore Wind Projects

The Philippines’ Department of Energy has awarded certificates of confirmation of commerciality to three significant offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 1.65 gigawatts (GW). Developed by a consortium of Triconti Windkraft Group, Sea Wind Holdings, and Stream Invest Holding, these projects mark a pivotal step towards expanding the country’s renewable energy capacity, particularly in offshore wind.


Major Offshore Wind Projects Set to Boost Renewable Energy in the Philippines

The three approved projects include the 450 MW Frontera Bay Wind Power Project and the 1.2 GW Guimaras Strait Project, which is divided into two phases of 600 MW each. These fixed-bottom offshore wind projects are expected to participate in the Philippines’ first offshore wind auction, scheduled for 2025.


These developments are part of the Philippines’ broader effort to increase the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. As of 2022, renewable energy contributed 22% to the country’s power mix, with geothermal accounting for 10%, hydropower 9%, and wind, solar, and biomass making up the remaining 3%.


Currently, the Philippines has no offshore wind capacity and only 427 MW of onshore wind capacity as of 2023. These newly approved offshore wind projects represent a significant leap in the country’s journey towards clean energy, helping to diversify its renewable portfolio. The proposed offshore wind auction in 2025 will be a critical moment for the industry, allowing these projects to compete and potentially accelerate the nation’s transition to greener energy sources.
