Singapore, September 2024 – In a major step toward enhancing regional cooperation in renewable energy, TotalEnergies and RGE, through their joint venture Singa Renewables Pte Ltd, have secured Conditional Approval from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) to import 1.0 gigawatt (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy from Indonesia. This announcement was made during the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024 by Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. Tan See Leng.
This milestone marks a significant leap in the renewable energy landscape for both countries, leveraging Indonesia's abundant solar resources to support Singapore’s clean energy ambitions. The imported solar power will play a crucial role in boosting Singapore's renewable energy supply, aligning with the city-state’s goal of enhancing its sustainability and decarbonization efforts.
Southeast Asia's Renewable Energy Partnership
The project will not only facilitate the export of solar energy to Singapore but also cater to Indonesia’s domestic needs. Singa Renewables will supply solar power to green industrial complexes in Indonesia’s Riau Province, contributing to the nation’s ambitious target of increasing renewable energy usage from 13% in 2023 to 31% by 2050. This dual strategy underscores the shared commitment of both countries to combat climate change and advance their energy transitions.
Powering Sustainable Growth in Singapore and Indonesia
Speaking about the partnership, Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential to drive energy transitions in both countries. He highlighted that the solar energy from Indonesia would provide clean power to corporate customers in Singapore via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), a vital step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
William Goh, Global Head of Renewable Energy at RGE, echoed these sentiments, noting the broader economic benefits for Indonesia. He emphasized the potential for increased investment and job creation in Indonesia’s solar sector, while also helping to decarbonize energy supplies for both nations.
Accelerating Project Development
With the EMA’s Conditional Approval now secured, TotalEnergies and RGE plan to fast-track the development of this landmark project. The companies will combine TotalEnergies' vast global experience in managing renewable energy projects with RGE’s deep-rooted presence in Indonesia to ensure the seamless delivery of solar power to Singapore and Indonesia.
