TotalEnergies partners with EREN Groupe, A.P. Møller Capital, and CIP to launch the Chbika green hydrogen project in Morocco, creating a renewable energy hub for clean hydrogen and ammonia production.
TotalEnergies, in collaboration with EREN Groupe, A.P. Møller Capital, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), is spearheading the Chbika project, a groundbreaking green hydrogen initiative in Morocco. The project, situated along Morocco’s Atlantic coast in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, will leverage the country’s abundant solar and wind resources to establish a 1 GW onshore renewable energy facility dedicated to green hydrogen production.
Through the electrolysis of desalinated seawater, the project aims to produce approximately 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, catering to both domestic and European markets. This renewable hydrogen venture underscores Morocco’s role as a potential clean energy hub for Europe, supporting Morocco’s energy transition, decarbonization, and industrialization goals.
TE H2 Joint Venture and Strategic Partnerships
The project is led by TE H2, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, which focuses on large-scale green hydrogen developments. David Corchia, CEO of TE H2, expressed confidence in the partnership’s ability to create sustainable, affordable energy solutions while driving job creation and economic growth in Morocco. The project also benefits from the expertise of A.P. Møller Capital in port infrastructure development and CIP’s renewable energy capabilities.
Preliminary Land Reservation Contract Signed
The consortium and the Moroccan government have signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation, marking a critical milestone for the project. TotalEnergies’ CEO Patrick Pouyanné praised Moroccan authorities for their support, viewing this initiative as a testament to Morocco’s green hydrogen potential.
Renewable Energy Hub for Economic Development
This first-of-its-kind project in Morocco aims to highlight the country’s renewable energy potential, with plans to export green hydrogen and ammonia to European markets while supporting Morocco’s decarbonized industrial development. The Chbika project is expected to set a precedent for future large-scale renewable and hydrogen projects across the region.
