TotalEnergies has issued a major call for tenders to supply 500,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, a crucial step in the company's plans to decarbonize its European refineries. This initiative is expected to cut around 5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from the company's refineries by 2030, aligning with TotalEnergies' ambition to achieve a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels.

Decarbonizing Refineries with Green Hydrogen

TotalEnergies operates six refineries in Europe, all of which use hydrogen in their processes. By shifting their hydrogen supply to green hydrogen, produced through renewable energy sources, the company is significantly advancing its decarbonization efforts. According to Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, the initiative marks a major milestone in the company's long-term sustainability goals. He stated:

"This massive call for tenders is fully aligned with TotalEnergies' ambition to decarbonize all of the hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030."

Expanding Hydrogen Projects Across Europe

In addition to this large-scale green hydrogen tender, TotalEnergies is already involved in several key hydrogen projects across Europe. These projects focus on innovative solutions for green and low-carbon hydrogen production, reinforcing the company’s dedication to sustainability:

  • La Mède (Masshylia Project): A partnership with Engie to produce green hydrogen for the biorefinery.

  • Grandpuits: A partnership with Air Liquide to create a circular system that produces 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year, partly renewable through biogas recycling.

  • Leuna: A collaboration with German company VNG to supply green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery.

  • Normandy: An agreement with Air Liquide to supply up to 15,000 tonnes of green and low-carbon hydrogen annually to the Normandy refinery.

Moving Towards Carbon-Free Refineries

This call for tenders reflects TotalEnergies’ strategy of embracing green hydrogen as a key component of decarbonizing its industrial operations. With ambitious projects already underway, the company is leveraging partnerships and third-party providers to further accelerate its efforts, significantly contributing to the energy transition in Europe.
