The US Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized a $72.8 million loan guarantee to develop a solar-plus-storage microgrid on the Viejas Tribe’s reservation near Alpine, California. This project, a collaboration between the California Energy Commission, US Bancorp Impact Finance, and Starbucks, aims to provide the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians with sustainable energy while lowering electricity costs for the tribe.

A Groundbreaking Solar and Battery System

The microgrid will feature a 15 MW solar system and a 70 MWh long-duration battery, ensuring a reliable energy source for the tribe. Once the systems are in place, the Viejas Tribe will secure electricity through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the project company, paving the way for enhanced energy independence. The savings generated from the reduced energy costs will be redirected to critical tribal services, benefiting the entire community.

Supporting Clean Energy and Tribal Empowerment

The project aligns with the broader US goal of transitioning to cleaner energy, supported by stakeholders such as the California Energy Commission and Starbucks. It will not only reduce the tribe's reliance on traditional energy sources but also serve as a model for other Native American tribes looking to adopt renewable energy solutions.

Biden Administration’s Push for Clean Energy

This solar-plus-storage initiative follows another major development in the US clean energy sector. Earlier this year, the Biden-Harris administration approved the Maryland Offshore Wind Project, pushing the country’s total offshore wind capacity to over 15 GW—halfway to the administration’s goal of 30 GW by 2030. These milestones highlight the administration's commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure nationwide.
