Uttar Pradesh targets 1 million metric tonnes of Green Hydrogen and Ammonia production by 2029, attracting ₹1.15 lakh crore investments and creating 20,000 jobs.

Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Investment

Uttar Pradesh has set a bold target to generate 1 million metric tonnes of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia annually by 2029, aiming to position itself as a major player in India's renewable energy landscape. The state government has already attracted investment proposals worth approximately ₹1.15 lakh crore from 17 entities, with these projects projected to create around 20,000 jobs across the state.

Key Investments in Green Hydrogen Projects

Among the notable investments, UK-based Trafalgar Square Capital has committed to establishing a 10,000-tonnes-per-annum green hydrogen production facility near Lucknow. Welspun Group, one of India’s leading conglomerates, plans to invest ₹40,000 crore in a Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia plant in Bulandshahr. Additionally, Hygenco Green Energies Pvt Ltd will set up a 0.2 million-tonne green hydrogen facility in Prayagraj with an investment of ₹16,000 crore.

Focus on Industrial Applications

Anupam Shukla, Director of the Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), highlighted the strategic focus of the initiative. "Our initial emphasis will be on the use of hydrogen in nitrogenous fertilizers and refinery industries in the state. Subsequently, we will also look at the application of green hydrogen in other emerging industries in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission,” said Shukla.

This shift towards green hydrogen will significantly aid in the decarbonization of industries such as chemicals and fertilizers, aligning with India’s broader goal to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero by 2070.

Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024: Incentives for Growth

To drive the growth of the green hydrogen and ammonia sectors, the state government has launched the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024. This policy offers administrative and financial incentives aimed at boosting investments and promoting industrial infrastructure development for green hydrogen production. The state government has introduced regulatory reforms, including a single-window clearance system, ensuring ease of doing business for investors and fostering the development of a sustainable green hydrogen economy.

Tapping into India’s Growing Renewable Energy Market

The state’s green hydrogen initiative aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to promote the widespread use of clean hydrogen in industries, transport, and energy sectors across India. Uttar Pradesh’s efforts will play a crucial role in meeting domestic green hydrogen demand while contributing to India’s renewable energy targets.
