Vestas has received a firm order to supply turbines for RWE’s 900 MW Nordseecluster B offshore wind project in Germany, marking another milestone in Europe’s renewable energy transition. This follows the earlier announcement in May 2024 regarding the project’s development.
A Landmark Project for Offshore Wind Energy
The order includes 60 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, showcasing Vestas' cutting-edge offshore wind technology. Vestas will oversee the supply, delivery, and commissioning of the turbines and provide service under a five-year agreement, followed by a long-term operational support contract.
The Nordseecluster project, located approximately 50 kilometers north of Juist Island in the German North Sea, is being developed in two phases:
Phase A: 660 MW, with 44 V236-15 MW turbines, announced as a firm order in June 2024.
Phase B: 900 MW, now confirmed with the 60-turbine order.
Timeline and Impact
Wind turbine installation for Nordseecluster B is scheduled to begin in 2028, with commercial operations expected to commence in early 2029. Once operational, the combined capacity of Nordseecluster A and B will significantly boost Germany’s renewable energy output and contribute to Europe’s offshore wind targets.
Key Industry Collaboration
Expressing enthusiasm for the project, Nils de Baar, President of Vestas Northern & Central Europe, stated,
“We’re pleased to contribute to this landmark project for Europe’s offshore wind sector, reflecting our ongoing commitment to advancing clean energy solutions. Our gratitude goes to RWE for years of excellent collaboration, which has been essential in bringing this project to life.”
Thomas Michel, COO of RWE Offshore Wind, added,
“With the addition of Nordseecluster B to our portfolio, we’re building offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 4.8 GW. Collaboration with supply chain partners like Vestas is critical for delivering this ambitious program.”
A Step Forward in Renewable Energy Goals
The Nordseecluster B project represents a significant step toward achieving Germany's renewable energy goals while supporting Europe’s broader transition to sustainable energy. It reflects the growing momentum of offshore wind projects across the continent and strengthens RWE and Vestas’ roles as leaders in the industry.
